  1. Had I not listened to the author speak at my college, I probably would ve never picked up this book Books about teachers who live to teach what I call vocational novels aren t generally my thing, simply because I learn a little something from every teacher good and bad, but never online , rather than a lot from one I prefer books about relationships, be they friendships, love stories, etc All of the relationships in this book are superficial, at best, nonexistent, at worst Before I continue, I w [...]

  2. I finished this book several day ago but had to chew on it before I wrote about it I had been built up with a friends review but had such a difficult time getting into it myself. But the wait was so worth it I had to warm up to the main character and as the story went along, I LOVED him for his dedication to his darlings. So three quarters of the book was awesome a love fest Male teachers are so few and far between and can have such an influence on students male and female. The mail character was b [...]

  3. I enjoyed reading this book after meeting the author and Pat Conroy at Page Palette in Fairhope I ve heard about the town of Mountain Brook and thus was intrigued to read this book and get insight into this privileged city I really admire what Norman Laney did for his darlings There are so few male teachers and probably even fewer teachers with so much dedication to their students I can t wait to read the rest of the series.

  4. Loved it Reminded me of my days of living in the tiny kingdom as well as all the great teachers I ve had in my life Plus, there are books to come AND Pat Conroy endorsed the author Be still my heartg on the next one

  5. In enjoyed the book a lot because it is set in a community near where I live I recognized the landmarks and types of people Clark did a good depicting her home town and the school she attended.

  6. Will be recommending it to everyone This is a delightful book The author has an amazing writing style and I will be looking for of her work.

  7. Oh, the sheer joy of this book, which is not outweighed in the least by the rarity of coming across a writer with complete command of language and craft The Headmaster s Darlings has so much excellence going on that it s a challenge for me to know where to slather my gushing praise first Within its 245 pages of the tightest, page turning story I ve read in as long as I can remember, there is comedy, sarcasm, heart tugging sentimentality, social commentary, and suspense to the point where, when I [...]

  8. This book had our group talking We are an Alabama book club living near the tiny kingdom of Mountain Brook Near, however, is a relative term to the people of Mountain Brook The residents of the tiny kingdom would never be able to find us if they get lost going to Vestavia Several in the group were familiar with Martin Hames, the man that Norman was based on, so there were lots of stories to tell and comparisons between the fictional version and reality Other characters were also based on well kn [...]

  9. I am the most important person in the world Because I am a teacher And my job is to save the souls of the damned What a brilliant main character Clark wove from the threads of manipulation and inspiration Disguised as a corpulent teacher, Norman Laney brilliantly leveraged the character of his high class darlings to create a school that produced world class scholars Love him or hate him, Laney used every tool at his disposal to affect the future. This is not a book to be read quickly, but a work [...]

  10. This a cute, funny story about Norman Laney and his quest to find out about why he was demanded to give his resignation to the school He sets on a journey with the help of some of students, who he has big dreams for The characters are enjoyable, and the plot is one that quickly takes you through the pages scene by scene I was awarded this book from Good Reads, but opinions are strictly my own.

  11. This book was a total joy Laugh out loud funny at times, poignant, moving Also an homage to a true hero who happened to come in the form of this 600 pound English teacher who tried to civilize his Mountain Brook students, as well as their parents And if you don t understand how people in this secluded upper class town could need civilization, he explains it well Loved it and will read her next book as soon as I can get my hands on it.

  12. Pat Conroy said it best Katherine Clark will long be remembered as the creator of Norman Laney, the greatest portrait of an American teacher I have ever read In addition, she takes aim at explores the people and attitudes of the community of Mountain Brook, Alabama Very well written and funny.

  13. The book is not an easy and quick read, because it has depth A wonderful story about the South The characters are very likeable, especially the main character I loved him.I would recommend this book to every book club and I am surely reading also the other Mountain Brook Novels.I won this book through a Giveaway.

  14. Norman Laney is a wonderful character both an aesthete and a vulgarian and utterly appealing I dare you not to fall in love with this fat man I didn t think the epilogue was necessary, especially since there are three books coming in the series, but Clark does a good job of skewering upper class Alabama society.

  15. The premise of this book is better than the actual book a fictional tribute to a teacher who was larger than life in many ways including weight and his capacity to aid his students in the direction of their lives against a backdrop of Southern prejudices, expectations and money galore in the upscale environs of Birmingham.

  16. I started this book expecting a frivolous beach read, by the end of the first chapter I knew it was much, much, The author is a fresh young southern writer in a category with Fannie Flag One of my top five for 2015.

  17. Loved this book The descriptions of the headmaster were so vivid that I felt like I knew Norman by the end of the novel.

  18. Great read Those from Birmingham will love the familiar places and everyone will love the characters

  19. I enjoyed this book, primarily, because I identified with the location and the subject It was well written, although a bit wordy, and I look forward to her next 3 in this series.
